Jailed death row teacher in danger of execution

According to reports, Tehran Prosecutor Jafari Dolat Abadi refrains from answering to the family of death row teacher Abdolreza Qanbari.

The family of death row political prisoner has constantly gone to the Prosecutor’s Office and other relevant institutions but Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolat Abadi refuses to see them.

His family and lawyer are looking to refer his case to the High Judicial Council for reexamination to revoke the death sentence which he was sentenced to on orders of the Intelligence Agency.

Qanbari is currently detained in cellblock 350 in Evin Prison and is suffering from a serious kidney problem but is denied serious treatment like other political prisoners.

This 43 year old father of two has taught for over 14 years in high schools, free universities and Payame Nour University. He was arrested on January 4, 2010 after intelligence agents raided his office and transferred him to cellblock 209 in Evin Prison. He was under physical and mental torture for several weeks in 209 and was charged with ‘enmity with God’ and ‘propagating against the government’.

The Ministry of Intelligence referred his case to the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court where he was sentenced to death by Salavati who is known for giving death sentences. The process for his arrest, torture and conviction took 25 days and his case was then referred to the 36th branch of the Revolutionary Court for confirmation. Ahmad Zargar, the head of this court branch who is a known torturer from the 80’s upheld his death sentence. The death sentence for this teacher can be carried out at any time.
