Iran hangs first activists from 2009 protests24/01 14:33 CET

Iran has hanged two activists it says took part in the protests against the result of the 2009 presidential election. The prosecutor’s office in Tehran identified the men as Jafar Kazemi and Mohammed al Hajaghaei.

They are the first reported executions of protesters involved in the demonstrations.

There were widespread and violent anti-government demonstrations in many cities across Iran after the 2009 vote. Dozens of protesters were killed and scores wounded in clashes with the security forces after the result was announced.

President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad’s rivals claimed the vote had been rigged in his favour.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has repeatedly called for those who were held to be freed.

Kazemi and Hajaghaei were both members of the exiled opposition group, the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran. The group is no longer on the EU list of foreign terrorist organisations, but it is still on the list held by Washington.
