Iran: Ten prisoners hanged in one day, number of executions sharply rising

19 January: Ten prisoners allegedly involved in offences related to drug trafficking were hanged early this morning, reported state-run news agency ISNA.

Some of the prisoners were heavily fined, properties confiscated, and had to receive dozens of lashes before their sentences were carried out.

The number of executions is rapidly rising since the beginning of 2011. According to state-run press reports, at least 65 prisoners have been hanged in the first 19 days of the New Year, which makes minimum three hangings every day on average.
