Iranian Regime official calls for a 1988-like massacre to suppress protests

On the 23 anniversary of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran, a regime official close to the mullahs’ Supreme Leader has called for a similar massacre to “neutralize the sedition,” in reference to the Iranian people’s nationwide protests.

In 1988, the Iranian regime committed a massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners in what rights organizations have described as a crime against humanity. An overwhelming majority of the victims were sympathizers of the main opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

According to the state-run Raja News on Saturday, mullah Hamid Rohani, a former member of the office of the regime’s founder, Khomeini, said, “The Imam’s [Khomeini] approach in 1988 with regards to the PMOI must be repeated in order to uproot the current sedition.”

Rohani added, “[Khomeini] said those [prisoners] who insist on their political stance deserve to die and must be tried and punished. Those hangings [in 1988] blinded the sedition at the time and uprooted it. I think in terms of the current sedition, if a firm and revolutionary stance like the one in 1988 is not adopted, then this problem will persist,” referring to the post-June 2009 anti-regime protests.
